State Certifications Requirements

  1. College credit
    1. 16 semester hours in the specified branch of music
    2. 16 semester hours of theoretical training
    3. 8 semester hours of music history and/or music literature
  2. An applicant for Active Membership who is unable to fulfill the requirements for State Certification by degree or diploma will be granted Provisional Certification for a period of 6 years.
    1. Examinations required for State Certification are:
      1. Pedagogy Notebook and Video Performance of Applicant’s Students/satisfies requirement of 16 semester hours in specific branch;
      2. Music Theory Exam/satisfies requirement for 16 semester hours in theoretical training.
      3. Music History Exam/satisfies requirement for 8 semester hours of music history/literature.
    2. An applicant’s transcript(s) is reviewed by the State Certification Chairman to determine which examinations are required. Only the examination(s) needed to fulfill the requirements will be required of the applicant.
  3. Certification Renewal Points -State Certified members who are not Nationally Certified are required to maintain State Certification through the documentation of 10 renewal points every 5 years.
    1. Each active member holding State Certification will be issued a folder for Documentation of Points for State Certification Renewal.
    2. Points may be earned through the following activities:
      1. Attending district, state, or national convention
      2. Attending division conference
      3. College course in music
      4. Workshop in music
      5. Serving 2-year term on state committee
      6. Serving as an audition chairman
      7. Monitoring at an OMTA audition
      8. Entering students in auditions
      9. Solo performance
      10. Serving 2-year term on OMTA Executive Board
      11. Serving as President, Vice-President, Secretary, or Treasurer of an affiliated local association
