National Certification Requirements

For information about national certification or to obtain an application packet, contact:

MTNA at 441 Vine Street, Suite 3100, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 Or call toll free: 888-512-5278; email: mtnanet@mtna.org
Requirements may be met by college academic course work consisting of:

1. Four semesters or six quarters in music theory.
2. Three semesters or five quarters in music history and literature
3. Two semesters or three quarters in study of pedagogy or teacher education.
4. Six semesters or nine quarters of applied music study in your instrument.

Candidates who do not have required academic coursework may take proficiency exams in any or all areas. All candidates must submit three letters of reference and a form validating two years of teaching experience.

All candidates must also complete a separate certification exam in which knowledge will be applied to every day teaching situations. This exam will be given at the state convention or one other place designated by the state. Candidates have two years to complete the certification process.

There is an alternative to taking the written certification exam. A typewritten paper may be submitted describing professional teaching practices, business management, and partnerships in the profession.

A more detailed guideline may be obtained from the National MTNA Office.
